49ers QB Trey Lance was named the starting quarterback for Week 5 against the Cardinals.
With Jimmy Garoppolo (calf) officially ruled out, Lance will become the fourth-youngest quarterback in the Super Bowl era to make his first career start. George Kittle's (calf, doubtful) absence is concerning since the 27-year-old is graded as Pro Football Focus' No. 3 pass-blocking tight end this year, but Trent Williams' full bill of health in practice should mask that. With seven carries in 30 minutes during last week's loss to Seattle, Lance's rushing floor as a low-end QB1 offsets the volatility of his (potential) inaccuracy if he struggles through the air. Note that this total (49) against the Cardinals has plummeted a full 4.5 points since initially opening at 53.5 on PointsBet.
